I've got four of the new Contigo travel mugs with the locking lid. My wife and I have been using them every day for at least six months and we have yet to have one leak. I'm very careful with mine, but my wife tosses hers around like a pillow. Puts it in her document bag while laying on its side. No leaks. Ever. Now, they aren't great at keeping coffee hot, maybe a couple of hours, but they don't leak. Also, the new ones have hinged seals so that they can be thoroughly cleaned (unlike the original ones which were hard to clean and did leak.)

My wife and I are also big Contigo fans.  Had one for a couple of years that I bounce around all over and never had it leak.  Just this week I bought an upgrade to a 20 oz with the locking button on the lid.  Super happy with it and you can pick it up for less than 25 bucks in target.

I'm a big fan of snow peak's offering

A little pricey, but it can fit a 12oz can with 1 of its three tops (tumbler, frozen cool top and hot top (good for if you want ot put hot stuffi n your bag). Its also decent for soups.

Mine is a little beat up from use.

A new employee uses a Contigo. Upon my asking her thoughts she snatched it up off the desk and started twirling it through the air with not even a drop coming out. I'm intrigued.

Still use mine every day. Hot coffee in the AM, and it stays hot for at least 2 hours, then it get's rinsed out and totes my water all day. Not one single drop.

Wow, such great choices to try for an insulated mug.  I would like one of each to give them a test.

So the Zojirushi I ordered recently has arrived-

First impressions: It's very sleek and appealing,

the top is easy to open/close and lock; definitely

a quality-looking build as far as form goes.

My only qualm so far is how small it looks; I ordered

the 16oz size, and it definitely looks smaller than in pictures.

This could be a pro or a con depending on exactly what

you are looking for in a thermos. They do offer a 20oz size;

if she finds that the 16oz is not enough, I'll keep it and get her

a 20oz.

As for function, I'll have to wait and see how

she likes the Zojirushi in terms of everyday use.

-----

On a side note: my friend owns a Contigo and she

is very happy with its build and functionality. I may

end up getting one for myself  :P

I just don't get how stainless steel can become so nasty. Mine went to hell in a matter of days.

salt water and stainless steel don't play well togther if you ever exposed it.

How the hell can anyone not be intimidated by a cup that sports not only the templar Cross, but a bolt face, a K-Bar, and vikings.  I bet  coffee tastes better in that cup!

I have a Kleen Kanteen thermos I use for hot drinks.  I used to work night shift at the hospital and it would keep my coffee hot until I could drink it about six hours in.

+1 on the Kleen Kanteen.

The wide mouth vacuum version has kept my frozen blended smoothies cold all day (I leave a straw in there) and also kept my hot coffee mostly hot all day. It has various kinds of replaceable caps so you're not stuck to one type of function. This is is just for reference:

Some day I might pull the trigger on a Zojirushi or a Contigo.

The problem with most mug and thermos combos is that a lot of the heat is lost by the material at the top. The vacuum or double-walled container helps but it's not completely insulated. If all day temperature is the main concern, it might be better served with a separate mug. Then you might want to look for a mug that can nicely fit on the bottom of a thermos type container.

While it is a bit low on my priority list, I will be getting a Zojirushi:

I know people who absolutely swear by them, and I have witnessed first hand how it keeps hot beverages HOT for 8 hours or more. It also fits the locking lid requirement. You can check it out on Amazon here.

my partner has one of these and loves it! Keeps his coffee hot for hours. I have the contigo with the locking button so it can't leak and it does a great job keeping my coffee hot for up to 5 hours. I think the contigo is just a bit less expensive and a little more user friendly to drink from.

I wish I knew about the Klean Kanteens a lot sooner.  Seriously.  A full metal thermos that really keeps hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold?

I bought mine off of Amazon Warehouse Deals, and it's a sexy beast, and keeps me happy with cool water and drinks.

I was spousally gifted this Contigo 20 oz'er last week. Java stays hot, not warm, until I'm finished with it by mid-morning. Haven't tried the cold liquid promise of 12 hours yet, but will soon.  It's August in Texas.  I say, Boffo!

never used mine for cold beverages but can attest to its ability to keep hot beverages hot for at least 5 hours. Love this company's products

I have a Klean Kanteen I use for when I'm outdoors and I have to say,

the stainless steel is a bit annoying. I have the one that is painted black,

and the black is starting to chip away, leaving specks of paint on my hand

whenever I go to take a drink. I never really mistreated the canteen,

it just naturally happened over time. In hindsight, I probably should have gotten

the Kanteen without the paint, but what the hell.

Another problem is the condensation that forms around the Kanteen;

if you like to keep canteens in your bag, it can be a problem.

In regards to Zojirushi vs. Contigo; if you're willing to pay more for the Zojirushi,

you will definitely get better insulation and a high-quality build.

Otherwise, Contigo makes a great build at a great price.

I agree with Chris. I love Hydro Flask and have been pretty impressed at how long mine keeps water cold. I have never tried using it for hot drinks though. Coldwater, you must have gotten a defective one. Hydro Flasks seem to be very popular in Oregon (they are designed and sold out of Bend, OR), and I have never met anyone who does not love their Hydro Flask.

I like my hydro flask, but I can't get on board with loving it. I got a 40 oz and the thing is huge. I never use it for hot drinks, so I can't speak to that. But I put ice and water in it. It doesn't stay cold anywhere near the 12 hours that it claims. Maybe I got a defective one....
