I saw this question on a Facebook group and wanted to get the forums input.

If given the choice of a single bladed Alox (or solo), or an Opinel, which would you choose?

I know both companies have some diehard fans. I love my Victorinox pioneer, so I'd go with that, even though it's not the solo version (I'd love to have one). However, Opinels have always caught my eye and are on my wishlist.

I would go with SAK. I get the appeal of Opinels. But they are finicky knives. A lot of people are not aware that these require a lot of attention and treatment before using to get the kind of performance and look that is raved about. Without it, you take it out of the box and use it or even just leave it there, it will turn to crap fast. Opinels are not for everyone. If you know how to treat it, its a sexy stylized performer. If you don't, its garbage.

SAK, you take it out of the box and 30 years later, its the same great performing knife you remember.

I think it's apples v. Oranges - I carry a SAK EDC cause I dont really need my 200 buck BM or my big old Buck lol.
I see multiple carry on these sites, the Opinel has uses I may not need but I own a few... carry what you need, or carry multiple like some do! :)

I've definitely debated having one in my bag I take to work or leave in my locker as a lunch knife.

Of course, both knives are gorgeous. I have a Victorinox Spartan and Opinel #8, and if I need an only single blade, I prefer the second. Because I am tormented by conscience when I wear only SAK Victorinox all the time :D

i do own a pioneer solo alox and while i don't have an opinel i did handled them for a while.  for me i would take the victorinox over opinel anytime for the slimmer profile build quality and the looks too.

I agree, the Opinel just seems a bit bulky for my liking.

I have owned both.  Syafiq and Darren have hit the nail on the head.  The Solo is a fuss free slip-joint with a low pocket profile and trusted performance.  The Opinel also has a tried and tested pedigree, but is not a fold and forget knife.  It needs looking after - trying to get a seized Opinel blade out is not a lot of fun.

What is fun with the Opinel is that you can mod it by carving the handle and/or file-working the blade, very readily.  Giving you a real sense of personal connection with your tool.

I have owned a few Opinels over the years and one Alox Solo.  The Opinels were not abused but still ended up in various states of seizure in the bottom of tool boxes.  The Alox Solo is functional as ever, good as new and living in a Maxpedition Micro as a backup.  Not something I'd trust to an Opinel.

In my experience the Victorinox is the superior tool (but you can't carve a beautiful handle on it like you can with an Opinel).

Hope that helps?
