When I was an adolescent I did this check-comb-knife-money-handkerchief-cigarettes

Now it's wallet-keys-knife-gun-handkerchief. LOL still carry the comb, but it's not as important as when I was 13.

Here's my question for discussion -

If you were allowed to have one item, and one single item only, as your EDC; what would it be? and why?

For me, it would be my Victrinox mechanic pocket knife. I have used that thing to go everywhere and do everything.

Agree! A SAK with some tools, Huntsman, Climber...

A knife, the possibilites are endless with a knife from cutting fruit, food to wood for a fire. Even for self-defense.

Knife is definitley a man's 'all-in-one' tool.

This is pretty spot on.

Allow me to take it one step further. I've seen tons of knives out there that go beyond just 'cutting'. A great 'one-and-only' piece would have to be my 'Leatherman'. Throw in some added gadgets and attachable tools and you're laughing.

Top 3 would be #1 Wallet, #2 Keychain, #3 Phone.

I carry a small SAK with my keys, but to count it separately, #4 SAK and #5 Sunglasses.

Smartphone assuming it's functional - communications, weather, navigation,, identification, even purchasing. If not that, my wallet. Knife next.

I grab my key fob, phone and my murse. Already loaded murse (Italian leather, actually bought it in Florence, Italy). The only thing I keep in my pocket is the key fob and Kershaw Leek, the murse has my carry gun of the day with at least  one spare mag, lights, knives, billfold, pens, pad and a host of accessories. Dumped the fanny pack in the trash!

1. Wallet

2. Phone

3. Keys

4. Watch

5. SAK Rambler

That still hasn't allowed me my flashlight or regular knife but I can survive without both in an urban setting. I did so for years before I got into this hobby.

I think that mostly have to do with people's state of mind and environment they live in.

In my case it's my wallet, hands down. It holds what I consider to be the 3 most important things that will help me face any dire urban situation: ID, money and health insurance card.

Money will solve most of my problems, and for any serious medical emergency I need my health insurance (you don't want public health care where I live).

I'd love to have my phone, but if I had to chose I would pick my wallet.

In the sense of a one item for any situation with the emphasis being on survival or self-defense, then I would have to choose my Leatherman Skeletool. PwaOk3dm.jpg
With the usefulness of a screwdriver, pair of pliers and the fact that it has a full-sized, half serrated frame lock knife built it, I think it takes the cake. However, if I were to just be worried about daily urban life, then I'd probably go with the wallet. Money, ID cards, Credit Cards, and maybe a PocketMonkey? ;)

At first I was thinking a waterbottle.

Someone mentioned a wallet and cash can solve most any urban problem. I gotta agree with that - mostly.

Now that it's been changed to 5 items:

1/ Wallet - need currency, health card, drivers' license, ICE card, extra aaa battery

2/ Neck lanyard - house key and whistle

3/ Belt pouch - contains pills, bandaids, tiny bottle of hand soap because public washroom soap gives me severe headaches

4/ Keys - normally has Mini Bic lighter, Olight i3s flashlight and nail clippers

But for this discussion I'll have - Leatherman PS4, Olight i3s flashlight and a car key

5/ Phone

I normally carry a Wave 2, Tac pen, notebook. Guess I could do without those.

I find it interesting that with a 5 item limit some folks are still picking more than 1 blade.
