Here's my question for discussion -

If you were allowed to have one item, and one single item only, as your EDC; what would it be? and why?

For me, it would be my Victrinox mechanic pocket knife.  I have used that thing to go everywhere and do everything.

Cool idea! My first impulse would be to say my Leatherman Charge AL, but it is really to heavy to EDC without a holster. I would probably have to go with my victorinox Tinker, just because it's the most tools in the lightest and smallest space that I can have. If not that, Maybe my Leatherman Sidekick, but I think I might get sick of the weight of that.

jacksbuddy, How do you like the pliers in your Mechanic? Do they work pretty well? I've only every used pliers in multi tools from Leatherman or Gerber but I've never used pliers in an SAK. What kinds of things have you used them on besides 1/4" bolts haha.

The pliers actually work pretty good.  The thinness of the pliers actually come in handy when you need to get into a tight place to hold a nut or bolt, and they are the perfect size for checking fuses on your car.

My Victorinox Swisstool has been on my belt every day for the last 13 years until the past year when I started working from home and not wearing a belt. It's not far from hand, but I still find myself reaching for it for any of the daily things I used to do with it. I hate not being able to take it on a plane for business trips and practically feel naked without it.

I've used it to take apart PCs at work, tighten loose screws, remove wall face plates, do auto repairs, hold things while welding, cut/strip wire, open cans, open bottles, crimp connectors and countless other things.

A knife. out of my current collection (small, sold a lot of them), I'd choose my Dragonfly ZDP-189. Wicked steel, and all I need is a 2.25 blade for every EDC task I come in contact with!

I'd have to go with my SAK Craftsman. It's got all the tools I'd need, plus it's not too big to be carried every day. As a matter of fact, I think I'll try that next week.

Maybe I am being too limiting with this question.  Let's change it up just a bit.  Before you walk out the door, you can grab the following 5 items, and the following 5 items only.  What are they? and rank them in importance.

Item #1 _________

Item #2 _________

Item #3 _________

Item #4 _________

Item #5 _________

I'll start.  In order, I grab: wallet, watch, keys, knife, notebook

What if I never take off the watch? Does it still count against the five?

Item #1 Phone (Galaxy S5)

Item #2 Wallet (I made a leather one for myself)

Item #3 Multitool (Leatherman Skeletool)

Item #4 Keys ((On the keychain is a Leatherman Style CS, a Nitecore Tube (I had the TiP but the battery drains too fast so I'm getting a replacement one), an EDC Ink Pen, a titanium pocket bit from Kickstarter, and my actual keys)

Item #5 Knife (or my Taurus PT709 Slim if I'm able to carry that day)

Good question. I've got a Casio with the original band that's over 14 years old. It's got to the point that I don't even have to look to change any of functions. I keep thinking of replacing the ugly old thing but it's like a friend that you've been through everything with and can depend on.

Wally and I are on the same page, but my priorities are a little different; wallet, watch, knife, gun, phone. And keys are a bonus.

Item #1: Knife. Even when lounging around at home, I still always have one on me.

Item #2: Watch

Item #3: Wallet

Item #4: Phone

Item #5: Flashlight. Don't always carry a light.

Gun will turn into #2 when I finally save the money for my CPL..

To answer the original question, my Leatherman Rebar.  There isn't much that I can't do with it, and the replaceable wire cutter blades make it invaluable.

Second question's answers:

   1.  Keys.  I ALWAYS grab keys first.  Even if I'm just taking out the trash.  I've accidentally locked myself out a couple of times.

   2.  Wallet

Sheath with:

   3.  Leatherman Rebar

   4.  Nebo CSI Edge 50 light

   5.  Gerber SB 2.5 knife

A knife, the possibilites are endless with a knife from cutting fruit, food to wood for a fire. Even for self-defense.

Knife is definitley a man's 'all-in-one' tool.
